Commentary20/20

September 27, 2007

Just as victory in the 20/20 championship provides a wonderful opportunity for the selectors to inject fresh blood into the Indian ODI team, the abbreviated form of the game should result in long overdue changes in the ESPN Star commentary team. To be honest, the team lead by Shastri, Gavaskar and Harsha Bhogle is getting fairly boring and repetitive. But for the new faces in the team like Ian Chappell, David Lloyd and Nasser Hussain, the commentary team would have been close to insufferable.

I have no idea of how commentators are tenured by television channels, but it may not be a bad idea to get Sanjay Manjrekar as part of the ESPN Star team. Sanjay is easily the most improved cricket commentator and I believe that he will be a good addition to the team there.

By itself, 20/20 is so visually appealing and action packed, that the role of the commentary team is marginal. Even the time that is taken in between deliveries is next to nothing. There is no requirement to clog the broadcast with inane comments, which is what some of these guys are good at. Good old English style understatement should be the order of the day.

To start with they can retire Gavaskar and Shastri. Harsha needs a better partner than these two for sure. He was so much more entertaining with Chappell, Lloyd or Hussain around.
Also, Alan Wilkins despite his innumerable mini-mistakes, is an endearing commentator. He needs more air-time.

Agree with you RS on Shastri and Gavaskar. Not so sure about Aln Wilkins. The issue being that he is not going to be missed by a large enough number of people.
