Twenty20

September 27, 2007

The euphoria of winning the World Twenty20 Championship has not died down. It is now the turn of the Indian cricket officials/ politicians to bask in the limelight. As has always been the case with Indian cricket and its fans, there is no sense of proportion.

What the success of the 20/20 Championship has done is convert a whole bunch of nay sayers into ardent fans of cricket’s latest avatar. It was wonderful reading Peter Roebuck, Sambit Bal, Mukul Kesavan et al extolling the pleasures of this condensed version. It is difficult to see test cricket surviving beyond a certain point of time, especially in India and Pakistan, where it is the television audience which drives cricket. I would love to be proved wrong.
